House Boats On The River Adur – Shoreham
Every so often you come across a magical sight, one of those moments where you weren’t expecting to see much and then blame! “What’s that I can see in the distance…”, “better explore…” well finding the house boats along the River Adur in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, was exactly just that special moment.
I had planned a trip to the coast for a birthday treat, but on a short stop off along the way I met some fellow photographers from Horsham who suggested instead of visiting Worthing I should check out Shoreham-by-Sea as it has some great photo opportunities and was not too far from Worthing, well I decided to check the place out and whilst I was there I spotted these very unusual house boats from a bridge I was crossing (over the River Adur).
As you can see in the photos there’s quite a variety of homemade boats which at first I could only describe as feeling like I just walked into a Mad Max movie, but a very relaxed one ;), there’s even a converted German minesweeper named Fische – at 150ft this looks so surreal sitting in a quiet riverbank! And yes as you will see there is also a boat with a full sized coach welded into it’s hull, this is the brainchild of local boatmaker/sculpturer Hamish, he own’s eight of the boats on the Riverbank and you can read a very interesting article on the man here (plus some photos from inside that crazy coach/boat!).
All in all a great find in Shoreham and worth a visit if your in Brighton for the day,
Enjoy.
